| Signs Breastfeeding is going well
Starting on the 5th day your baby has:
- 5 or more wet diapers by the fifth day, and they are at least 3tbls of clear liquid
- 2 or more stools at day 5 or more is normal, and the Bowel Movements are mustard colored mostly liquid with a few seeds and curds. They must be larger than a quarter to count!
- Breasts feel full before the feedings and soft and loose after
- You can hear or see your baby swallowing.
- Baby gains between 4-7 oz a week.
- Baby regains birth weight by 2 weeks.
- Your baby feeds between 8-14 times a day.
- Your baby is active and alert at the beginning of the feeding.
Call Parenting & Breastfeeding Services or Your Pediatrician if your baby is:
- Hard to wake up for a feeding and quickly falls asleep and does not continue to actively suck and swallow.
- Feeds less than 8x in 24 hours You cannot see or hear your baby swallowing.
- Your baby is unusually restless or fussy does not settle down.
- After a feeding the urine is dark yellow or red.
- Stool is still black or dark green after the 5th day.
- You have not seen a stool in 2 days.
- Baby has dropped below 10% when leaving the hospital.
- Baby is not back to birth weight by 2 weeks
