Lactation consultants are health care professionals who are knowledgeable, skilled and experienced in lactation and breastfeeding management.  Their primary focus is the provision of education, assistance and support to breastfeeding mothers and their children.

Lactation consultants function as members of the health care team to promote support and protects breastfeeding by:

Empowering women to make informed infant feeding decisions

Act as advocates for and with breastfeeding family

Fostering family support for the breastfeeding mother

Assisting women to learn the skills to successfully initiate and maintain lactation while overcoming obstacles to breastfeeding, thus enhancing maternal role satisfaction.
